alex the fairy returns to finders fee with rusty blade tears, the second record of three. the first track, a 4/4 kick blindly barging through an arcade is followed by a bathtub riding down the motorway in a dali-esque landscape. on the b-side, an angry cordless phone precedes some rusty ice cubes in arctic water. finder’s fee is a label for found sounds, found melodies and found rhythms.

matt edwards launches stranger in the night with his first solo material since 2017. the rekids offshoot will release regular music by four artists, namely radio slave, king britt, anthony rother and fred p, who will each drop three eps over the next year. “with rekids being 100% focused on releasing music for dance floors i felt the need to create a new platform to explore a wider musical vision and invite some of my all-time electronic musical heroes to be a part of the series,” says matt edwards. both numbers near the 12-minute mark but each track portrays a different aesthetic. opening with precision drums and crystalline notes, ‘ground control’ makes a nod towards the hi-tech soul sound of detroit and drives forward using a sultry bassline, erratic chords and the occasional icy stab as an array of contrasting sounds operate in unison. on the flip, a syncopated rhythm lays the foundation for ‘last communication’ whilst a tantalising melody joins poignant synths, constructing a profound and hypnotising journey.
flor the yage is a project based in hannover-germany, with two producers from qutio -ecuador. they bring a fresh latin music feeling with their new perception of cumbia and chicha

the 14th release on the ifs imprint is a really special one, from a legend in the 140 scene, cluekid. he makes his return to 12-, after a very successful release with canadian imprint vinyl vigilance, and dishes up two lost dubplates which have been needing the plate treatment for years. having already received heavy support from the likes of j:kenzo, v.i.v.e.k, darkside and distance, this release is a must have. particularly with the added addition of the full sleeve artwork, designed by emily dayson illustration.
combo lulo returns to names you can trust for their sophomore single, digging deeper into the diversified sounds of the caribbean that helped define their debut. while the first single took a jamaican foundation south into the neighboring continent, fusing the sensibilities of rock steady with those of classic afro-latin orchestras, this single goes far east. inspired by the heady and sublime sounds of foundational ska mixed with east african influences, (think buster s islam, don d s addis ababa or further east), the sieve & the sand is a brand new composition within this natural order, albeit with the fortune of different reggae eras and studio styles to draw from. divided into two parts (but also available seamlessly as it was played in the studio), combo lulo s talented players move effortlessly from the galloping shuffle of ska into a deep and dark, roots radics-styled instrumental. its a lovely ode to the original styles of reggae, but also another impressive accomplishment that will surely leave listeners and new fans in anticipation of the shape of things to come for combo lulo.
